International Business Woman, CEO & Community Leader

When we first met Lydia, things were not going well.  Her parents had passed away, her husband had left her to be with another woman in the same town, and she was living in extreme poverty. She was working at a local co-operative of farmers, barely scratching out enough for her and her seven children to survive.

But Lydia is an entrepreneur at heart. She simply needed an opportunity to unleash her talent. Partnering with EndPoverty gave her the courage and means to pursue her dreams.

Lydia knew the value of ginger root from her work at the co-op. And she knew there was a demand for ginger powder. With a loan from End Poverty Lydia began a business making ginger powder. She has gradually grown her business, which has not only provided food, clothing, and shelter for her own family, but also created jobs for 20 of her neighbors.

After working with a co-operative of farmers and receiving business training, support and a micro-loan from EndPoverty, Lydia launched her business processing ginger powder. As she began her business Lydia noticed making larger volumes available at a time attracted customers from farther distances who were willing to pay more. Lydia began to expand, eventually hiring 20 full-time employees sell to clients as far away as the countries in East Africa and the Middle East.

Lydia is a huge inspiration. Not only has she built a profitable business maximizing her sales each week, but she has also hired many vulnerable youth and women workers on her farm who did not have access to jobs otherwise.

Lydia will tell you that EndPoverty’s partner ACI, is filled with good people who have not only provided loans to her, but they have encouraged her and pushed her and her team to do better. Lydia describes how her circumstances do not get her down anymore because she loves to work. She is so thankful to be able to support her children and neighbors from the proceeds of her business.

Lydia considers EndPoverty and our local partner ACI, among her good friends. She relies on ACI, and our program leaders  believe in her and continue to support her. Lydia’s testimony shows how one woman can spark transformation.
